In 1845 Creston, OH became home to a farmhouse constructed on a 150 acre plot of ground. The little boy who grew up there, Martin Cole, inherited the homestead and in 1908 encased the original structure in brick. The home became known as the Cole Mansion and gained notoriety as one of the area's leading tobacco farms. Martin's wife passed away in 1924 and in the mid-1930s Martin sold the property which would then become the Shady Rest Nursing Home. Shady Rest continued to serve the local community through the mid 1970s when it was purchased by a minister and his family who converted the nursing home into a chapel. Sometime later the property was sold again, this time being reinvented as a bed and breakfast inn.
Paulette and Bob Dale visited the inn on a get-away weekend and when they realized the property was for sale their heads began to spin with the possibilities before them. Both were very interested in collecting antiques, and Paulette was hoping to work in a gift shop when she retired from her teaching career. They purchased the property and then began to convert the former Cole Mansion into their own gift shop. The third floor of the building housed a loom which, according to local legend, belonged to Martin's wife back in 1908. As a tip of the hat to Mrs. Martin Cole, Paulette and Bob named their shop The Lady's Loom at Dunmovin and opened their doors on Mother's Day weekend in 2001. We met with Paulette and Bob recently, and listened as Paulette provided this overview of the gift shop at The Lady's Loom at Dunmovin;
The Lady's Loom at Dunmovin is an intimate gift shop with style and personality. We search for a wide range of unique items that you will not find anywhere else, and strive to keep our prices affordable. Rather than display our items in lighted cabinets or on wire racks, we have created a comfortable, relaxing atmosphere where the products we carry are arranged in a home-type setting.
The Lady's Loom at Dunmovin is a family-owned and operated business. I was still teaching when we first opened, and my mother, sister, and husband all pitched in to help get the business going. I was fortunate to be a Medina County resident before moving here, and had the pleasure of shopping at some of the wonderful gift shops in the Wadsworth and Medina areas. I've always believed in the benefits of "retail therapy", and wanted my shop to be the kind of place you would visit and say, "I need to bring my friend or mother here. She would absolutely love it!" The shop has a small, cozy atmosphere where you can relax and listen to good music while exploring our offerings at your leisure.
Bob was a Fenton art glass collector when we opened and wanted a small area for Fenton which quickly became our destination product. Fenton mixes beautifully with our other home decor items which range from Primitive to Victorian and even Country-politan. Our woman's accessories department includes Annaleece by Devries featuring hypo-allergenic, nickel-free jewelry with Swarouski crystals. Another popular line is Mad by Design which designs beautiful jewelry and purses accented with natural horn and shell. We also carry their spa line "Twisted Orchid".
Our baby department features the Bearington Baby line which has coordinating blankets, booties, and other accessories, and we carry plush Bearington Bears and the Boyd's Baby line of products. We have Jim Shore figurines by Enesco providing that special gift for anyone on your shopping list, and our candle line comes from two sisters in Kentucky doing business as "Warmest Wishes". The candles come in small, crystal teapots and are perfect for housewarming or hostess gifts. Coming soon will be a phenomenal line of recycled functional artware from the Blue Bag of North Olmsted, OH ranging from cheese trays to serving dishes and a line of bottles that can be custom engraved for special occasions.
With affordability in mind, we offer a 10% discount every day for customers 55 years of age and older. We also offer a 20% discount with our Preferred Customer Card.
