Several years ago, Jon Bridge was introduced to a contractor in Buffalo, New York who was helping homeowners save money on their energy costs by insulating their new homes with a revolutionary polyurethane foam product. Jon, impressed with what he saw, attended classroom training in the technique and began working for the company to gain valuable field experience. In 2005, Jon founded Foam Crafters Insulation Co. in Westlake, Ohio to enable property owners in Northeast Ohio to realize the financial benefits of this super-efficient foam insulation. We visited with Jon recently, and listened as he provided this overview of Foam Crafters Insulation's offerings;
Foam Crafters Insulation Co. is an owner-operated insulation installer using the latest products and techniques to provide building owners with superior energy performance. Committed to providing affordable, healthy, and energy-efficient solutions that are environmentally friendly, permanent, and American made, our goal is to help reduce our nation's dependence on foreign energy, improve the indoor air quality in the community, and provide the most professional insulation services in the area. Our product is designed to be applied to buildings while they are under construction, and is not suitable for retro-fitting existing structures.
We treat new residential and commercial buildings with sprayed-on polyurethane foam insulation by Demilec USA to provide owners with superior energy efficiency and comfort. Our product is an open cell, semi-rigid, polyurethane foam insulation system made up of millions of microscopic cells that simultaneously insulate and air-seal. Specifically designed to make your building more energy efficient, comfortable, quiet, and less dusty, our foam is applied as a liquid which expands into a semi-rigid mass. It automatically seals off drafty areas like baseboards, headers, sill plates, and around window, door, electrical outlets, and pipes. It also minimizes uncontrolled air leakage throughout the building envelope, thereby reducing energy loss.
Our foam insulation is derived from renewable plant-based materials and contains no ozone depleting chemicals, CFC, HCFC, fibers, formaldehyde, or asbestos. The greatest benefit of our products is in its thermal resistance performance and low air leakage. Our product is custom installed, expands after spraying, and can completely fill any cavity and form a continuous air barrier by adhering to other building products. These are things that typical batts, boards, and blown insulation simply cannot achieve.
I have designed a financial model to help quantify the cost and payback time of our foam insulation. The size of the average American household is 2,330 square feet. Insulating a house of this size with normal fiberglass insulation would cost approximately $4,000.00, whereas insulating it with foam would increase the installation cost by two and a half times. Foam insulation, although, can cut your energy use in half, a savings so dramatic that it would pay for the upgrade in energy savings alone in only three and a half years at current energy prices. Naturally, energy prices continue to rise over time, so this fact indicates that not only will future payback times more than likely be shorter, but that yearly energy savings from insulating with foam will continue to increase.
The foam insulation we install is warrantied by the manufacturer against cracking, crumbling, settling, or sagging for the life of the building. In addition, we reduce the air leakage in a building to an absolute minimum, resulting in the ability for building owners to receive maximum benefit from today's modern, high-efficiency furnaces and air conditioners.
