At the turn of the last century, C.R. Barnard was a jeweler in Wadsworth, Ohio who opened an optometric practice after obtaining his degree in optometry. Dr. Barnard was joined in practice in 1948 by his son Dr. Amos Barnard. His grandson, Dr. A. Gary Barnard graduated from optometry school in June 1968, returned to Wadsworth, and became the third generation of the Barnard family tradition when he founded his own optometric practice a few months later. We met with Dr. A. Gary Barnard recently, and listened as he outlined the services his practice provides;

My practice is a full-service general optometric practice serving patients of all ages. My services range from eyeglasses and contact lenses to eye examinations designed to detect cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, amblyopia, and other conditions which can impact your vision. I offer a wide selection of modern lens and frame options, and strive to ensure each patient enjoys a lifetime of excellent optical health.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my practice is treating patients of all ages. I treat many children of people who were children themselves when I first started in practice, and I even have a few patients who were seen years ago by my grandfather. Watching these families grow has been a wonderful experience throughout the past thirty-nine years.

Speech, hearing, walking, and motor skills are learned. The ability to act upon what you see is also a learned skill. Many times children can see well, but they cannot make their hands or minds react efficiently to what their eyes see. This can result in sloppy handwriting, poor organization skills with pen and paper, and low comprehension when reading. For this reason, I highly recommend that all children have a complete optometric examination before entering kindergarten. By testing and comparing their ocular motor skills (eye movement and tracking) and their perceptual motor skills, I can easily determine if their motor skills match their visual skills, thereby paving the way for their future success.

I prefer to think of my practice as a family-oriented service business dedicated to protecting the health of your eyes. Your vision is constantly changing from the time you are born until you are very old, and regular eye examinations are the first step to optimal optical health.
