The Medina County Health Department extends congratulations to Lane Kessler, from the Environmental Health Division, for passing the Ohio Registered Sanitarian exam on her first attempt. The Ohio Registered Sanitarian exam ensures registered sanitarians possess and maintain specialized knowledge and skills in the field of environmental health. In approximately a year, Lane will be eligible to apply to the Ohio State Board of Sanitarian Registration upon the completion of her two years of training for her official designation as a Registered Sanitarian. Lane Kessler is a graduate of Highland High School and Ohio Northern University where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Environmental Studies. Lane started her career at the Medina County Health Department during college as a member of the mosquito control program. After graduating, she applied for a job as a Sanitarian-in-Training at the Medina County Health Department. She also considered careers at various environmental companies and park districts, but she chose the Medina County Health Department because the Environmental Division is committed to the prevention of disease in Medina County through a variety of challenging and interesting inspections in a friendly workplace. Lane specializes in the enforcement of the recently voter-approved indoor smoke-free workplace law. Her role is a combination of education and enforcement for public places and places of employment. Last summer, she assisted in inspecting close to eighty public swimming pools which included checking the mechanical equipment, testing the water quality, and reviewing record sheets about pool maintenance and water chemistry two or more times each season. "Inspecting public pools is one my favorite assignments because I love working outdoors, interacting with the public, and providing services that will protect our citizens at play. The Medina County Health Department's Environmental Health Division's protection programs cover everything in the daily lives of our residents from restaurants to swimming pools to the sewage and water programs. I have learned that people often don't know what we do because it all happens behind the scenes. I hope that through more education, our residents will learn about the work we do and how it is preventing disease, and protecting and promoting health," said Ms. Kessler. The Medina County Health Department has specialized in protecting the health of Medina County Citizens since 1918. If you have questions about environmental health, contact the Environmental Health Division at (330) 723-9523 or toll-free at 1 (888) 723-9688. Services are partially funded by your local health levy. |
